House of Neighborly Service Launches ROOTS to Help Preserve Homes in 78207

Revitalizing our neighborhood

House of Neighborly Service is proud to officially launch ROOTS—Rehabilitation of Owner-Occupied Homes to Sustain Community—our newest initiative designed to help low-income families preserve and remain safely in their homes in San Antonio’s 78207 neighborhood.

ROOTS was created to address the growing need for housing preservation in an area where many families face economic hardship. Through the program, eligible homeowners can request up to $10,000 in home repairs to improve safety, accessibility, and overall living conditions.

Thanks to initial seed funding from Truist Bank, ROOTS has already made a meaningful difference in the lives of residents. One of the first projects included a wheelchair-accessible bathroom remodel for a couple who had struggled to safely use their shower. Another project built a backyard ramp for a disabled veteran, allowing him to enjoy time outside with his dogs for the first time in two years. ROOTS also funded a front-entry ramp for an older adult recovering from a life-changing surgery.

The success of these first three projects has helped secure additional support from Truist, the City of San Antonio and Wells Fargo, allowing the program to continue expanding its reach across the community.

ROOTS initially served clients identified through House of Neighborly Service’s food delivery program for homebound older adults. The program is expanding to support families at every stage of life. By helping residents maintain safe, accessible homes, ROOTS supports both quality of life and the opportunity to build generational wealth within the community.

Interest in the program has continued to grow, especially following a recent KSAT feature story highlighting the impact of ROOTS. Since then, House of Neighborly Service has received numerous inquiries from families in need of these services. While there is already a waiting list, we are excited to keep this important work moving forward and continue investing in San Antonio’s Westside.
